Office365 SAML SSO w/ AppController 2.6

Somewhat recently Citrix released a patch for AppController 2.6 which reintroduced the Office365 SAML SSO connector. We were pretty excited because we use CloudGateway and Office365 in house and the SSO functionality is really handy. Unfortunately setup is not super intuitive so I am going to publish a quick guide on how to get it done. First thing you need to do is enable AD directory sync between CloudGateway's AD domain and Office365 if you haven't already. I am not going to get too in depth with this process because there are a ton of guides out there. One…

vSphere 5.1 VMware Tools Upgrade on XenDesktop Streamed VM (PVS 6.1) - Part I

Intro Part of my job as Lab Manager is something that Sysadmins across the world have to deal with - routine maintenance. It's been a while since we rolled out vSphere 5.1 in the lab and we just upgraded our hosts to  so I figured it was about time to start patching VMware Tools on all of our guests. One of the tricker upgrades is the vDisk we use to boot our XenDesktop VMs via Citrix Provisioning Server. Here is a quick guide on how I did things after some trial and error, be aware there are other ways…

PCIe Parallel Port Passthrough w/ VMware Workstation 9

My neighbor Dave works for  they are a small shop out of Sparta, TN and their infrastructure is very minimal since they don't really have a dedicated IT Pro. The other day they asked me where to find a hardware capable of running Windows 98. Needless to say I was a little surprised. After further inquiry it turns out they use a legacy app to control the ovens that they use to mold their kayaks. It only runs on Win98, and it requires a serial port to connect to the oven. I suggested compatibility mode but they swore that hey…

PowerShell AD User Search

Had a buddy ask me for a quick PowerShell script the other day and I was happy to oblige, as I rarely get to write PowerShell these days and I really enjoy it. So without further adieu, here is a quick and dirty script that takes a CSV file with first names, middle initials, and last names, then spits out a simple text file of exact matches in AD. Great for environments where only a few users had accounts in the past and now for whatever reason you want to give everyone an account or something. It's not the most…

Cables and Kits - Truly Experts in Awesome

So I ordered a few rackmount kits from CablesAndKits.com yesterday, and just for fun I included this in the notes: Here's what came in the mail today (I didn't even pay for expedited shipping): Aside from the fact that this is hilarious, it's a straight up brilliant business move, these guys got 3 posts from my company on their facebook page praising them, and I've now blogged and tweeted about it. All for what? 5 minutes doodling on a box? On top of the hilarity, I now know that these guys are paying attention and listening to what I…

UCS - Persist WWNN & WWPN With New Service Profile From Template

I have been looking for an excuse to blog about something other than CloudGateway and thankfully, I finally found it today (aww c'mon Citrix, you know I love you baby). I had someone ask me how they could create a new Service Profile from a Service Profile template while retaining the WWNN and WWPNs from their existing profile. The reason behind this was that the old profile was no longer going to be used, but it was already zoned into the SAN. So if we could duplicate the WWNN and WWPNs we wouldn't have to zone the new profile into…

Deploying iOS Apps with AppController 2.5

Perhaps the biggest draw of Citrix CloudGateway Enterprise is its MDX Technology So first thing's first, in order to do this you are going to need a paid Apple developer account Certificate and Profile Generation I am going to assume if you are an iOS developer that you are already more familiar with this process than I am, so the certificate process is mainly geared towards those of us that just want to wrap up the Citrix email and web browse apps. Plus I am completely unqualified to instruct anyone, anywhere on how to develop, build, and archive even simple…
